THE FAMOUS ORCHESTRA VISITS ARGENTINA FOR THE FIRST TIME WITH HIS CONDUCTOR, MYUNG-WHUN CHUNG, AND ACCOMPANIED BY SERGIO TIEMPO, OUTSTANDING YOUNG ARGENTINIAN PIANIST

The Philharmonic Orchestra was created in 1976 in order to provide Radio France with an instrument suitable to a wide variety of programs. The originality of this orchestra of 141 musicians resides in its great flexibility: it can be broken down into several ensembles for grand orchestras or instrumental ensembles alike. From 1984 to 2000, the history of sixteen years of collaboration with Marek Janowski was marked by work done on the Germanic repertoire. The Orchestra also devotes a significant part of its activity to creation, expanding its repertoire with about fifteen new works each year.

The musicians of the Radio France Philharmonic Orchestra and their musical director Myung-Whun Chung have been working together since May 2000. This collaboration allowed several in Asia, United states of Europe.

The korean-American conductor and pianist, Myung-Whun Chung, in 1974 won the second prize at the Tchaikovsky piano competition in Moscow. After his musical studies at the Mannes School and at the Juilliard School in New York, he became Carlo Maria Giulini’s assistant in 1979 at the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra and two years later he was named Associate Conductor. Myung-Whun Chung was Music Director of the Saarbrücken Radio Symphony Orchestra from 1984 to 1990, Principal Guest Conductor of the Teatro Comunale of Florence from 1987 to 1992 and Music Director of the Opéra de Paris-Bastille from 1989 to 1994. The year 2000 marked his return to Paris as Music Director of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. His love for Italy has been at the basis of his extensive work in that country for many years, including, since 1997, his appointment as Principal Conductor of the Santa Cecilia Orchestra in Rome. Outside Europe, he has been increasingly committed to musical and social causes in Asia through his role as Music Advisor of the Tokyo Philharmonic Orchestra. He has conducted virtually all the world’s leading orchestras and is an exclusive recording artist for Deutsche Grammophon since 1990. Myung-Whun Chung has been the recipient of many honours and prizes for his artistic work. Deeply sensitive to humanitarian and ecological problems of our age, Myung-Whun Chung has served as Ambassador for the Drug Control Program at the United Nations (UNDCP); in 1995, he was named “Man of the year” by UNESCO and also “Most Distinguished Personality” by the Korean press. In 1996, he received the “Kumkuan”, the highest cultural award of the Korean government for his contribution to Korean musical life. Chung now serves as Honorary Cultural Ambassador for Korea, the first in the Korean government’s history.

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Sergio Tiempo’s first teacher was his mother. He achieved early acclaim by appearing on Argentine televisions when he was four years old and gave concerts in London and France at age seven. In 1980, at age eight, he received special recognition at the Ealing Music Festival. In 1986, he was awarded the Alex De Vries prize. That same year, a live recording of his performance at his Concertgebouw recital was released. His list of teachers has included Tessa Nicholson, Maria Curcio, Pierre Sancan, Michel Beroff, Jacques Detiege, Alan Weiss and Nelson Freire. He has also attended the International Piano Academy Lake Como, where he worked with Dimitri Bashkirov, Fou Ts'ong, Murray Perahia and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau. He has also been taught by and performed with Martha Argerich. Argerich remains one of his staunchest supporters. He has recorded several collections of classical music, and has received particular praise for his interpretation of the Gaspard de la Nuit by Ravel and his versions of the Chopin Preludes.
