The underlying philosophy of this orchestra's unique concert programmes can be summed up as "tradition and innovation”. Founded by Christoph Stepp in 1950, in 1995 the artistic direction was passed on to Christoph Poppen, who quickly gave the orchestra a unique new profile. Alexander Liebreich became artistic director and chief conductor of the MKO in October 2006.
Many accolades bear witness to the orchestra's approach to concert programming, underscoring its image as an ambassador for classical music. These include the Association of Music Publishers' Award for the "best concert programme" for the seasons 2001/02 and 2005/06, the Music Prize of the City of Munich (2000), the Cannes International Classical Award (2002), the Christoph and Stephan Kaske-Foundation Award (2002), Grants-in-aid from the Ernst von Siemens Musikstiftung (2001-2003) and in Mai 2008 the "New Listening"-Prize, awarded by the Foundation for "Contemporary Music in Dialogue" and the Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts for the successful procurement of contemporary music.
The core of the orchestra's artistic activities in Munich is its subscription series, based in Munich's Prince Regent's Theatre, which focuses on a specific theme each season.
