After the brilliant performance for the Mozarteum during Season 2009, returns in a second visit one of the most outstanding string quartets in the history of Music.
Formed in 1976, the Emerson String Quartet took its name from the American poet and philosopher Ralph Waldo Emerson. Violinists Eugene Drucker and Philip Setzer alternate in the first chair position and are joined by violist Lawrence Dutton and cellist David Finckel. Since January 2002, Messrs. Drucker, Setzer and Dutton have stood for their performances; Mr. Finckel sits on a podium. The Quartet is based in New York City..
Throughout its history, the Emerson String Quartet has garnered an international reputation for groundbreaking chamber music projects and correlated recordings for Deutsche Grammophon. In 1988, the Quartet attracted national attention with the presentation of the six Bartók quartets in a single evening for its Carnegie Hall debut. The Emerson's subsequent release of the cycle received the 1989 Grammy® Awards for "Best Classical Album" and "Best Chamber Music Performance" and Gramophone Magazine's 1989 "Record of the Year Award" - the first time in the history of each award that a chamber music ensemble had ever received the top prize.
The 2010-2011 season includes a three-concert series at London's Wigmore Hall and the world premiere of Thomas Adès' The Four Quarters in Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium, a work the quartet later performs at Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles and at South Bank Centre in London. Additional international performances are slated for France, Russia, Mexico and Norway, along with multiple cities in Germany, Italy, Denmark, Switzerland and Austria. Also include engagements in various cities of USA & Canada. The Emerson String Quartet's most recent recording for Deutsche Grammophon is Old World, New World, a 3-CD set of Dvo?ák's late quartets, Cypresses and the viola quintet, released in April 2010.The Emerson continues its residency at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, now in its 31st sold-out season.
